February Photography Thoughts!

The Growth Of Film Cameras!

Interestingly the growth of film and film cameras is primarily in the demographics of Millennials and Gen Z. These young people are turning to vintage analog cameras and film for many of their film and video projects.

I learned photography in the film age of photography in the 1970's and 1980's. I was always a thrill to pick up my film and negatives. How would the pictures turn out? Were they exactly what I saw in the viewfinder of the camera?

Growing up all our family memories were documented in the many photo albums. There were always cameras in our home. My uncle was a professional and seemed to have a camera in his hands constantly. He also had a freezer with all different types of film. Head had a darkroom stocked with assorted paper and chemicals.

With limited exposure per roll, we had to carefully choose each subject. Taking your prints to get developed and waiting to pick them up was all part of the photography experience. The advent of 1-hour photography labs, it certainly made the wait more tolerable. There was nothing like looking at the photos for the first time. Deciding which images would go into a photo album, and which ones you would make extra copies of or make into larger images.

When I worked in the retail photography industry, we had shelves full of photo albums in all shapes and sizes, photo frames that were wood, metal and plastic, All these items where strategically placed close to where you picked up the developed film. Behind the cash register there was a wall of film from all the major manufacturers. Pick up your developed film and buy more film.

The Camera Phone!

It is hard to imagine that the camera phone is twenty-four years old. Even to an older photographer like me, it seems camera phones have been around forever. Cellular phones changed the way we communicate and do work.

Few people did not have the Nokia 3310 in 2000. I loved that little blue phone and it was my first cell phone. The price per min to talk was high and who new that the world would soon change forever.
