The warm weather will be here soon and time to make some new summer memories!
A lot of people wonder if they should set their Digital Camera to "RAW" or "JPEG" ?
Let's think of RAW files as a digital negatives similar to the negatives you get in film photography/ These Raw files capture everything your camera sensor recorded, completely unprocessed. Nothing gets thrown away. Just like in film photography. This allows you to have maximum flexibility when editing the images in your photo editing software.
JPEG files has your camera doing the processing for you. This is fast, convenient, and ready to share straight away. If you're shooting fast-moving events or documentary work where you need to hand off photos quickly, JPEG is the way to go.
Most cameras let you shoot RAW + JPEG at the same time. This allows you the editing flexibility of RAW and a ready-to-share JPEG with every shot. When shooting in both type of files on each image you are using more space on your memory card{s).
I found this great article from Digital Photography School discussing RAW vs JPEG
Mirrorless Vs DSLR:
The mirror itself isn’t involved in the photo, it’s just a means of looking through the lens. So if the same sensor is used in mirrorless and DSLR cameras, the image quality will be the same. A full-frame DSLR won’t match a mirrorless camera in terms of technique innovation.
Most mirrorless cameras are technically superior to their DSLR counterparts. they are faster and more intelligent AF, faster burst speeds, access to more advanced optics, and much better video capabilities.
I personally believe that the best camera is the one you have in your hands, Take a DSLR and a Mirrorless camera with many of the same features and the older DSLR will probably cost less to buy.
To the naked eye the difference between an image captured on a pro-grade DSLR and the same image captured on a pro-grade mirrorless.
People who already invested in a DSLR photography system may find in harder to quickly change to a Mirrorless Camera system due to the cost and not getting a lot of money for the older system during trade-in.
Both the DSLR and Mirrorless cameras offer the two main sensor types offered by Camera manufacturers: Full-frame and APS-C (often called “crop-frame”). Again, both DSLR and Mirrorless cameras have the same basic modes; Auto, Programed, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual Mode.
The DSLR has a better battery life since DSLR’s offer the ability to shoot without using the LCD screen or EVF, which can extend the battery life considerably. However, Mirrorless batteries have improved dramatically over the last few years.
Like any other major purchase, personal taste both in camera type and manufacturer comes into the decision. As todays DSLR’s and Mirrorless cameras tend to be a long-term investment. I would suggest speaking with a reputable camera store, do online research, speak to a friend who is into photography, and consider what type of photography & video you are interested in exploring with the new camera.
